Course content
- Installation Design & Technology - (One): BS 7671: 2008 - Requirements for Electrical Installations.
- Installation Design & Technology - (Two): BS 7671: 2008 - Requirements for Electrical Installations.
- Installation Design & Technology - (Three): Special installations including outside, construction, demolition, transportable and temporary sites, Building regulations and approved documents, Local Authority Building Control.
- Initial Verification & Certification: British Standards and Regulations.
- Periodic Inspection & Testing: Purpose and necessity, Testing Methods, In Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, Requirements of the Code of Practice for In-Service testing of Electrical Equipment.
- Electrical Maintenance & Fault Finding: Maintenance management, Principles and techniques of fault diagnosis, Fault finding, Test procedures, Report forms and documentation.
- Electrical Building Services
Assessment
Content, knowledge and understanding is assessed through both coursework and examination. Many of the units include practical coursework, this will be assessed by activities that test the student’s ability to apply the requirements of industry standards to situations found in the workplace, inspect and test installations and evaluate findings.
Some technical units also include on-line multiple choice tests. They provide rapid feedback to allow learners and tutors to measure understanding and progress.
Who is the course for?
This course is intended for people already employed within the electrical contracting industry or associated industries or those who have previously had experience within this field. Students achieving this qualification would enhance their career opportunities within existing employment and those seeking work would be well equipped to exploit employment opportunities.
Entry requirements
The normal qualifications are passes at GCSE Level C or above in five subjects, including English and Maths - alternatively a pass in Key Skills at Level 2, plus one of the following:
- 40 UCAS points in one ‘A’ Level or two ‘AS’ Levels
- Successful completion of a recognised Access course
- Any other qualification which is considered to be of the equivalent standard
- City & Guilds 2330 Level 3 or equivalent
- Mature applicants with relevant experience but no formal qualifications and also apprentices are welcome.
- All applicants must be a minimum age of 18 years old.
What can I do after this course?
Progression is available on to the BEng honours degree programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at London South Bank University. This will take 15 months or 2 years depending on the mode of study being full time or part time.
