Jocelin Francis - HND Music Production
From the age of about 14, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music so at 16 I joined Carshalton College to gain a BTEC Level 3 in Music Technology.
When I passed the BTEC I took a year out to work on my music, but soon realised that if I wanted to have the best chance of breaking into the industry I needed a heavier weight qualification. I had got as far as I could with my music, I needed more knowledge and structured learning. That’s when I enrolled on the HND in Music Production.
Coming back to Carshalton College was an easy decision for me as I had such a good experience previously.
The tutors give you exactly the right balance of their industry experience, support and guidance throughout the course and freedom in the studio - freedom to make your own music. Their approach has been pivotal to me getting the most I can out of the course, they speak to students as adults and have a genuine interest in our music. They have our respect because of their knowledge, experience of the industry and a genuine want for us to succeed.
I have dyslexia, but I have not let this stand in my way because I am determined and because on the occasions I have needed extra help I have been fully supported by my tutors. They have been brilliant at guiding me throughout the course - nothing is ever too much trouble. Their patience and support means that I have been able to overcome any hurdles when it comes to writing essays for example.
The knowledge I have gained and the confidence my tutors have instilled in me helped me to get my job as a studio manager/technician at Relentless 5 Studios, working with the likes of Ghets and Kano.
Working and learning can be a challenge sometimes, but a big benefit has been bringing my experience of the workplace into the classroom. I do have to manage my time, but it has been great to earn money doing something I love.
If you are serious about working in the music industry my advice would be stay true to yourself and don’t take any shortcuts, make sure you learn as much as you can. Passion for your subject plus education equals success.
