Liam Aydin, joined Carshalton College in 2014 on the CSkills Level 1 Diploma in Plastering. Liam is now on the Level 3 Diploma in Plastering, mentors Level 1 students and is about to start an Apprenticeship with local plastering firm Renlon.

Liam was a student at Carew Manor but struggled to settle in. The school referred Liam to SILC (Skills & Integrated Learning Centre) an alternative provision based in Mitcham offering training in construction for pre-16 students.

On meeting Chaz Watson at the Centre, Chaz was direct in telling Liam to knuckle down, don’t go down the wrong road, you need to gain a qualification, turn up to college and you will succeed. SILC offer City & Guilds accreditation from Entry Level 3 Award to Level One Diplomas and allowed Liam to try different areas of construction with tiling, painting & decorating, brickwork, plumbing and plastering. Deciding that plastering might be a possible career option, Chaz brought Liam to Carshalton College for an interview.

At the interview Liam meet Plastering tutor Richard Childs. Richard saw the potential in Liam and he joined on the Level 1 Diploma.

Liam has progressed through each level and is now completing his Level 3 Diploma before he leaves College next Summer. During his time here, Liam has meet Level 1 students and fallen into a mentor role and now helps them during lesson time. His positive attitude has encouraged the students to make the most of the course and he has passed on his knowledge and taught them new skills.

Liam also completed a work experience placement with local firm Renlon. Renlon are based in Mitcham and have been in business for over 35 years specialising in basement water proofing, rising damp and timber treatment. Renlon have an ongoing relationship with the college with Liam being the third apprentice they have taken on. Kevin McCluskey from the company visits the college each week to teach practical lessons and took Liam on work experience to a swimming pool in Streatham where they completed the rendering to the walls. The College is delighted Liam has been offered the apprenticeship with Renlon which will start in February 2017.

Talking about the future and his time at the College, Liam said

“I feel lucky that SILC and Carshalton College, and my work experience with Renlon who have all supported me to gain the practical and theory knowledge, which has given me the confidence to meet the demands of my chosen career. I enjoy plastering from all the preparation involved to seeing the end result when the work is finished and how good it looks. I am thrilled and delighted that I have been offered this opportunity to join Renlon as a future apprentice.”
