GCSE English

To be accepted on this GCSE you must demonstrate a commitment to completing the programme of study. This will be discussed and assessed at application. You will undertake a BKSB assessment to confirm suitability.


Course Content

This unit based, flexible specification is assessed through exams and controlled assessments.  It covers the functional elements of English as well as creative writing and speaking and listening. Students must provide fresh, individual responses to each element.
Unit 1 - Understanding and producing non-fiction texts
Unit 2 - Speaking and Listening
Unit 3 - Part A - Understanding spoken and written texts and writing creatively
Unit 3 - Part B - Producing creative texts (creative writing)
Unit 3 - Part C - Spoken Language Study


Through unseen papers
1 Explorations in creative reading and writing
2 Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives
3 Non-exam assessment

Entry requirements

Grade D at GCSE or the equivalent


1 Year, 3 Hours per week


This qualification counts towards the English Baccalaureate and the performance measures when studied with an accredited Level 1/Level 2 English Literature qualification. This includes the AQA GCSE English Literature and the AQA Level 1/2 Certificate in English Literature.
This course is particularly suitable for students who wish to progress to A-level Mathematics or other high level qualifications.
It is particularly suitable for adults who wish to or who are taking an Access programme (link to CD1064 Access to Higher Education Diploma: Health and Human Sciences or CD5012 Access to Higher Education Diploma: Midwifery) . 
Can be taken alongside CD8350 GCSE in Science B (Science in Context) for students studying for Health and Social Care / Nursing to complement their university applications.
