BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sports and Public Services (Vocational Studies)

This course is designed to give school leavers a good overall perspective as well as the knowledge, skills and understanding of the sports and public services industries and the different pathways they can go down. These include the Police or Fire Services, Prison, Armed Forces or security and those who wants to pursue a career in sport science, sport coaching or human performance.

After competition of Level 1 you can specialise at Level 2 in Sports or Public Services. 

Course Content

  • Job Opportunities in Sport and Active Leisure
  • Planning Own Fitness Programme
  • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry into the Uniformed Public Services
  • Public Service Careers
  • Developing Personal Skills for Leadership
  • Public Services: Assisting the Public


Additional Qualifications - Functional Skills/GCSEs in English & Maths which are a mandatory part of the course.


Work Experience/Employability Skills - Work experience will be undertaken by all students, you will work with the Public Services and Sports Team throughout the year working as a Recreation Assistant in Pulse gym/Sports Hall, this is a mandatory part of your course.

Trips and visits to Sports and Public Services career fairs and employers are organised throughout the course. 

Students on this course will be invited to attend cross-college events that will develop their job skills.


Assessments - Students are required to complete a portfolio (file) containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.


Suitability - This course is designed for young people who want a good grounding in the work and opportunities of the Sports and Public Services industries and the associated skills needed to progress into employment.

The course will also help learners develop their English, maths and employability skills, and gain a Level 1 qualification.

Entry Requirements

Minimum three GCSEs at grade A - E/9-2 to include English (essential), or you will have successfully completed an Entry Level 3 programme including Functional Skills in English.

A positive reference is also required from school, employer or a tutor - this must include attendance and punctuality.

You may also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview.


One year (36 weeks), 16 hours over the week depending on timetable


After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to apply for a Level 2 course, subject to interview and grades achieved, or go on to work in the Sports or Public Services industries. If you want information on Level 2 courses offered, please contact Admissions.
