YMCA Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure



YMCA Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure. Is a course designed to give students a good overall perspective of the sports Industry and the different pathways they can go down. You will study ten units that will prepare you for work in the Sports industry. You may also choose to progress onto one of the Level 2 Sports pathways.

  • Planning Own Fitness Programme
  • Investigating Rights and Responsibilities at Work
  • Taking Part in Sport
  • Assisting a Leader of Sports or Active Leisure Activities to Plan and Deliver an Activity
  • Job Opportunities in Sport and Active Leisure
  • Working in Sport and Active Leisure
  • Sport and Active Leisure Project
  • Managing Your Health at Work

Additional Qualifications

  • Functional Skills/GCSEs  in English & maths which are a mandatory part of the course

Work Experience/Employability Skills

Work experience will be undertaken by all students, you will work with the Sports Team throughout the year working as a Recreation Assisstant in Pulse gym/Sports Hall, this is a mandatory part of your course.

Trips and visits to Sports career fairs and employers are organised throughout the course. 

Students on this course will be invited to attend cross-college events that will develop their job skills.



Students are required to complete a portfolio (file) containing evidence of assignments, practical performance, presentations, group exercises and discussions.


This course is designed for young people who want a good grounding in the work and opportunities of the sports industry and the associated skills needed to progress onto sports-related employment.
The course will also help learners develop their English, maths and employability skills, and gain a Level 1 qualification.

Entry Requirements

Minimum three GCSEs at grade A - E/9-2 to include English (essential), or you will have successfully completed an Entry Level 3 programme including Functional Skills in English.

A positive reference is also required from school, employer or a tutor - this must include attendance and punctuality.
You may also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview.


One year (36 weeks), 16 hours over three days per week


After successful completion of the course, learners will be able to apply for a Level 2 course, subject to interview and grades achieved, or go on to work in the sports industry. If you want information on Level 2 courses offered, please contact Admissions.

    Bernardo Maia, Sports Level 2   “I always liked sports from a young age and practise whenever I have the chance.  Carshalton College is my local college and as they had a good range of Sports courses, I chose to enrol on the Level 1 Sports course last year.    I immediately liked the staff tutors who were friendly and approachable and the facilities looked good.  We get to use the mini gym in the College plus Pulse Health & Fitness Centre next door, which has a large sports hall to play football, basketball, badminton etc.  Also a fully equipped gym with loads of equipment and of course a swimming pool.    I am now on the Level 2 Sports course.
