The Committee of South London Principals (COSLP) held their anuual Best Learner Awards on Thursday 19 May after a break of three long years to celebrate their very best learners and amazing teachers.

Student winner: Marny Parsons

Marny Parsons (pictured centre) is a successful Carpentry student, set to achieve her Level 3 diploma this summer.

Despite knowing little about carpentry and being nervous about enrolling on the course, Marny undertook a six-week trial and loved it. She coped well with the challenges of the pandemic, maintaining her dedication and commitment. She is the only girl on her course but this has not stopped her building good relations with her peers and is a valued member of the group.

Marny’s 100% attendance is outstanding and a credit to her commitment. She is a pleasure to have at Carshalton College.

Staff winner #1: Daren Hull:

Daren started at Carshalton College in August 2010, bringing some excellent carpentry skills with him. His success in getting learners ready for industry is outstanding and his attendance rates are exceptional.

The support Daren provides to his team is also fantastic. Today’s award is a celebration of his success with the many learners he has taught over the last twelve years. These include our College’s Best Learner, Marny, and also fellow tutor, Zoe Eldridge. Zoe came up through Daren’s teaching and training and is now an established and competent part of the team.

Thank you for all your hard work Daren.

Staff winner#2: Zoe Eldridge

After deciding A Levels weren’t for her, Zoe started at Carshalton College in September 2013 on a Level 1 Carpentry programme and progressed through to Level 3 in 2016.

While studying, Zoe gained a passion for teaching and she spent some time as a learning support worker. She has since gone on to teach learners who have progressed from Level 1 through to Level 3, and many of her students have advanced into employment and careers within the construction industry.

Zoe has now completed her teaching Diploma in Education. She is a competent, and highly valued member of staff within the team and the College – much deserving of this award.
