Marny Parsons is the newest member of the Carpentry and MultiSkills team at Carshalton College.

How did you become a Technician at the College?

"I completed three years of study at Carshalton College, Levels 1, 2 and 3 in Capentry. At the end of my Level 3, I won the Best Learner Award 2022 by the Committee of South London Principals. The Technician position became vacant and I was offered the job".

What work experience have you had before?

"I have helped out tutors on a couple of occasions in the past. Plus, during my time at the College we completed some work experience at the Sound Lounge in Sutton orgainised by the Employability team. I have also worked in a fish and chip shop and a private nursery".

Any challenges to your journey?

"I faced the challenge of being the only girl in my class most of the time, however this wasn’t a challenge for long as I learnt to deal with it and looked on it as an opportunity to show that, yes, construction is a male dominated industry but woman can do it just as well. By me getting stuck in and getting on with my work I have earnt the respect of my peers and students in my class".

What do you enjoy about your job?

"Working with students, helping them to achieve their tasks and watching them progress through the course. Also working closely as part of a team alongside the carpentry tutors".

Daren Hull, Team Leader for Construction said:

"Since taking on the position as Carpentry Technician, Marny has developed a genuine rapport with students within Levels 1, 2 & 3. Marny has also completed the Carpentry Diplomas at Levels  1, 2 & 3 achieving high grades so has a strong knowledge of the course content and requirements.

This has been invaluable in assisting the learners and inspiring them to progress with continued high standards of workmanship.

Marny has integrated  well within the construction team and is now a valuable member of the team".
